7.9 Cubic Metres
Stanley Picker Gallery, Kingston University

Private View: Wednesday 14 April 6.30-8.30pm

7.9 Cubic Metres is pleased to present Politics of Seduction, a new exhibition by Sinta Tantra.

Using the novel ‘Les Liaisons Dangereuses’ as a starting point, Tantra researches 18th century letters and archives held within the Royal Academy of Arts London and reflects upon the nature of letter writing, communication and collection as a form of archive; the manner in which relationships are fprmed through what is being said / unsaid. Exploring a viewer’s inquisitiveness to read in between the lines and the deconstruction of the signs and symbols of a public as well as private persona.

‘Politics of Seduction’ presents us with the dichotomy of historical authorship; how we look longingly at the past and how identity is established through a globalised social economy. Tantra’s new work transforms the space witha dynamic and decorative installation. The main feature of which is a painted floor that brings together geometric patters and an 18th Century colour palette. The exhibition furthers themes in her past work: a delight in surface image, the porous boundary between pictorial and physical spaces, ideas of spectacle, submergence and superabundance.

7.9 Cubic Metres is an artist-initiated project by James Carrigan and curated by Eliza Tan. 7.9 is a free standing structure which operates as a micro gallery within Stanley Picker Gallery. As an autonomous and transitional project space, 7.9 serves as an architectural insert, a sculptural work, a collaborative document and open platform for emerging British talent and international artists.
