As part of Pitzhanger’s Artists at Home series, Sinta Tantra’s upcoming exhibition, The Lightclub of Batavia, takes Paul Scheerbart’s 1912 novel of the same name as the starting point for a series of abstract paintings and sculptures in gold and Prussian blue in dialogue with Soane’s historic interiors.
The book describes the construction of a spa inside a mine that bathes its users not in water but in light. Echoing this and drawing on scenes and images inspired by her family’s Balinese home, the gold of Tantra’s works playfully bounce light throughout the spaces while raising questions of wealth, beauty, extraction and colonialism. The exhibition runs from 24 January in the Manor, and a programme of events and talks will be announced in the new year. Stay tuned for more details.
